The Obligation of the Shari'a Hijab: Between the Decisiveness of the Text and Allegations of Dispute

While negligence in observing the Shar'i Hijab is a significant sin, the transgression that far exceeds it is the denial of its status as a divine obligation or the claim that it is a matter of scholarly disagreement. The evidence from the Qur'an, the Sunnah, and the consensus (Ijma') of the Ummah has firmly established the obligation of the Hijab; throughout Islamic history, no reputable scholar has ever held a contrary view.
Evidence from the Holy Qur'an
The divine command was explicitly revealed in the decisive verses of the Revelation, where Allah Almighty says:
{And let them draw their veils over their bosoms}
Surah Al-Nur, Verse 31.
Furthermore, He, Glory be to Him, addressed His Noble Prophet and the women of the believers collectively, saying:
{O Prophet, tell your wives and your daughters and the women of the believers to draw their cloaks close round them}
Surah Al-Ahzab, Verse 59. This is a general divine command for every Muslim woman to observe modesty and the Hijab.
The Significance of the Prophetic Sunnah
The matter was not limited to Qur'anic texts; the Prophetic Sunnah confirmed this principle during instances of allegiance and commitment. When Umaymah bint Ruqayqah came to the Prophet (peace be upon him) to pledge her allegiance to Islam, he accepted her pledge based on the foundations of the faith and noble character, which included:
(He took her pledge that she would not associate anything with Allah, nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor display her finery [Tabarruj] like that of the former days of ignorance).
Warning against following the proponents of misguidance who seek to dilute religious constants is the duty of our time, in order to safeguard the faith and protect the Hereafter from the consequences of Tabarruj and temptation.
