The Trivialization of Atheism: A Reading into the Crisis of Contemporary Secular Discourse

Mocking outward rituals such as the beard and niqab and presenting them as tools to undermine the essence of Islam is not merely a passing offense. Rather, it is a crude and demeaning reductionism of a project intended to market atheism within Islamic societies. This type of discourse serves only to empty value-based discussions of their substance, transforming them into superficial material lacking depth and logic.
If a fair-minded atheist were to reflect on this scene, they would find that this specific agenda creates an automatic immunity among the masses against atheism and secularism instead of spreading them. We are witnessing a repetition of the denial of the Sunnah discourse scenario; where the propositions of certain controversial figures over the years contributed to generating an opposite societal reaction, ending in widespread rejection, as manifested in the shock caused by the reaction toward entities such as Takween.
Between the First Generation and Contemporary Reality
The scenario repeats today with the discourse of secularism and atheism; instead of presenting arguments that convince the mind, we find a discourse that pushes people toward aversion and resistance. Here, one wonders: where is that rational discourse that existed in the past with figures like Louis Awad, Farah Antun, and Shibli Shumayyil? And where are the serious discussions of theodicy and the analysis of deep philosophical arguments that were presented in specific intellectual and historical contexts?
A comparison between the thinkers of the past and the current scene reveals the extent of the decline; if they were to see how the idea of atheism has been trivialized and turned into material for cheap mockery, they would have taken a completely different stance toward this scene, which lacks the most basic elements of rigorous epistemological critique.
