The Methodology of Acquiring Sharia Knowledge in the Digital Space Age

Dr. Haitham Talaat
The issue of receiving religious knowledge is not a mere intellectual luxury, but rather a fundamental pillar of salvation. Religion is a divine revelation derived from the definitive verses of the Quran and the authentic Sunnah, through the understanding of trustworthy scholars recognized for their knowledge and piety—not merely fleeting opinions or popular trends that fill the digital space.
The Danger of Unreliable Sources
A Muslim must beware of being deceived by appearances; not everyone who takes center stage or dons the attire of scholars is a scholar, and not every influencer who cites a verse or a Hadith possesses the qualification to understand the objectives of Sharia and derive its rulings. Relying on short, fragmented clips aimed at gathering views may lead to a deviation in understanding and a defect in creed.
So ask the people of the message if you do not know.
[Surah An-Nahl: 43]
Rules of Verification in Seeking Knowledge
The rule in this matter is simple and clear:
Seeking the original source and referring to senior scholars whose profound knowledge is a matter of consensus within the Ummah.
Ensuring the soundness of the speaker's methodology and their creedal integrity before taking a fatwa or information from them.
Realizing that the matter of religion is the matter of the Hereafter and eternal life; thus, it is not permissible to surrender the mind and heart to those who do not possess the tools of Ijtihad and verification.
