The Harms of Opposing Polygyny: A Reading of Social and Psychological Impacts

One who contemplates our contemporary reality finds that society has, in many aspects, become a party to a conflict against fitrah and legislation, particularly regarding the issue of polygyny; where social crimes are committed in the name of jealousy or preserving the rights of the first wife, while the rights of broad categories of women—such as widows, divorcees, and those whose marriage has been delayed—are overlooked.
Allah has fashioned man with the capacity for polygyny and legislated it for profound wisdoms; so that a woman may find a home and a family rather than remaining alone in the face of life's burdens. However, when the proponents of atheism and corruption combated this legislation through media and drama, Allah's law became, in the eyes of some, a crime or a scandal, and society began to sanctify the jealousy of the first wife at the expense of the dignity and rights of others.
Consequences of Rejecting Polygyny
Forcing women to accept humiliation, insult, and physical abuse for fear of divorce, knowing that society will not show mercy to a divorcee nor allow her a dignified second marriage opportunity.
Stigmatizing the second wife as a 'husband-stealer,' which prevents the building of stable families based on affection and mercy.
Refusing to marry young men to divorcees or widows, which obstructs the interests of the people and contradicts the Prophetic guidance.
The issue at its core is not merely feelings of jealousy, but rather a matter of opposing Allah's law which inevitably leads to societal corruption. Whenever the fitrah is fought, moral and social crises emerge that have no solution except by returning to the expanse of wise Divine legislation.
