The Danger of Violating Allah's Prohibitions in Seclusion: Reflections on the Hadith of Thawban

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah. To proceed: Among the greatest causes of corruption for a servant's obedience and the nullification of their deeds is the belittling of Allah's gaze upon them in private. Severe warnings have been narrated regarding this matter that shake the living heart.
On the authority of Thawban, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him and his family) said: 'I certainly know people of my nation who will come on the Day of Resurrection with good deeds like the white mountains of Tihamah, but Allah, the Mighty and Sublime, will make them as scattered dust.' Thawban said: 'O Messenger of Allah, describe them to us, clarify them for us, so that we do not become like them while we do not know.' He said: 'Indeed, they are your brothers, and from your own skin, and they take from the night as you take, but they are a people who, when they are alone with the prohibitions of Allah, they violate them.'
Narrated by Imam Ibn Majah in his Sunan.
The Reality of Taqwa in Secret and Public
The allure of the world and its desires may deceive a person, such that they display righteousness before creation while challenging Allah with sins when hidden from their eyes. As it is said: "Do not be an enemy to Iblis in public, and a friend to him in private." Digital platforms and modern media have become today among the greatest veils that distract from the obedience of Allah and open the doors of temptation in solitude.
Therefore, it is incumbent upon the Muslim to magnify the vision of Allah in their heart and to seek refuge in Him, the Exalted, from being among those whose deeds are lost. Allah is well-aware of the hearts, Knower of all needs, and whoever is truthful with Allah, He shall aid them and provide for them from His lawful bounty.
Means of Steadfastness and Protection
To guard against this dangerous slip, the following is advised:
Seeking aid from Allah and constantly asking Him for steadfastness.
Maintaining a daily litany (wird) of remembrance and prayers upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) with the intention of seeking help in restraining desires.
Invoking the mindfulness of Allah at all times, and having certainty that His grace and mercy are broader than every fleeting pleasure.
