On the twenty-first of December each year, the so-called "World Meditation Day" is promoted globally—an occasion exploited to spread practices in which millions engage without realizing their intellectual origins or theological backgrounds. What we have witnessed in recent years is a vast expansion of what is known as the New Age movement, which is among the fastest-growing spiritual movements, succeeding in dressing ancient pagan practices in a modern, contemporary garb.
These practices manifest in various forms, including: Yoga, Energy Meditation, and breathing exercises, presented to people as tools for relaxation, mental health, mindfulness, and positive energy. However, the truth that escapes many is that energy meditation is not a neutral psychological exercise, but rather a practice deeply rooted in ancient pagan philosophies.
Intellectual Deviation and Spiritual Risks
Historically, these practices have been linked to sorcery, divination, and rituals that contradict the essence of Monotheism (Tawhid). At their core, they rely on the gradual suspension of the intellect and the silencing of thought through specific rituals, claiming to reach healing, esoteric knowledge, or foretelling the future. These practices lead to a disruption of consciousness and open the door to spiritual experiences fraught with danger, making them far removed from true empirical science and sound religion.
The New Age movement is not merely a set of self-development programs; it is a comprehensive pagan intellectual and spiritual system. Researchers have warned of its severe psychological effects; even some of its promoters have admitted that it can lead to acute psychological disorders, which in some cases have reached suicidal tendencies.
The Duty of Clarification and Warning
It is regrettable that these ideas have infiltrated our Islamic societies, finding trainers, courses, and certifications bought and sold without clarifying their reality or warning of their danger. The warning against this charlatanism, which hides behind the veil of human development and spirituality, has been long overdue.
The legal and scientific duty necessitates alerting people with truth and evidence, to protect the creed, safeguard minds, and show mercy to creation by preventing them from falling into the snares of these contemporary pagan delusions.
