The crime of adultery is not merely a passing mistake; rather, it is a blight that turns a person's life upside down, bringing upon them a degree of woe that no human can endure in this world before the Hereafter. The Pious Predecessors warned of the ill omen of this disobedience and its effects that eradicate all blessing.
Whenever adultery and usury become prevalent among a people, they have invited the punishment of Allah upon themselves.
This report narrated from the noble companion Ibn Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) clarifies that the spread of these indecencies is a herald of the removal of divine protection and the descent of divine retribution.
The Magnitude of the Sin and Its Status Among Major Sins
The Imams of guidance sensed the gravity of this sin, to the extent that Imam Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "I know of no sin after murder greater than adultery." This confirms that we are not facing a simple transgression, but a major sin that demolishes a person's inner being.
Allah, Glorified and Exalted be He, coupled adultery with polytheism and homicide in His Noble Book, saying:
{And those who do not invoke with Allah another deity or kill the soul which Allah has forbidden [to be killed], except by right, and do not commit adultery. And whoever should do that will meet a penalty. Multiplied for him is the punishment on the Day of Resurrection, and he will abide therein humiliated.}
Consequences Resulting from Indecency
This act of disobedience has immediate consequences that one feels in their life, including:
The departure of light from the face, replaced by a shroud of darkness.
The invitation of poverty and the eradication of blessing in sustenance and lifespan.
The corruption of faith and the loss of chivalry (muru’ah).
The violation of the honor of others and the breaking of their spirits, making it a chain of transitive ruin.
This world is but a breath compared to the Hereafter, and it does not befit a rational person to sell their faith, honor, and psychological stability for a momentary lust followed by a lifetime of regret. The door remains open for repentance and turning back to Allah, the Almighty.
