The Peril of Underestimating Sins and the Fallacy of Relying Solely on the Breadth of Mercy

One of the greatest gateways through which Satan enters the minds of some is the illusion that the vastness of Allah's mercy necessitates an absence of accountability or punishment. They repeat phrases such as: "Allah is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful, and He will not punish us for these minor sins." This is a deficient understanding that overlooks the requirements of Divine Justice and the wisdom behind trials.
Lessons from History and Revelation
Whoever contemplates the texts of Revelation finds that a single sin was the cause of Iblis's expulsion from the kingdom of the heavens; at that time, it was not disbelief or atheism, but rather arrogance toward a single command. Likewise, consider what befell the people of Lut, whose cities Allah raised until the angels heard the barking of their dogs, then He turned them upside down and rained upon them stones of layered clay.
Nor should we forget what befell Qarun, for whom the earth swallowed him, his home, and his wealth; or the People of the Sabbath who were transformed into apes and swine; or the punishment of the Day of the Shadow that descended upon the people of Shu'ayb. All these punishments were the result of sins that their perpetrators deemed trivial or whose consequences they underestimated.
Some scholars have said: He who legislated the amputation of the hand for stealing a small amount of wealth in this world cannot be presumed safe from punishing other sins; for the punishment may be greater than we can imagine.
The Effects of Sins in This Life
Sins have manifest effects that may appear as a constriction in sustenance, distress in social relations, or the loss of peace of mind and psychological tranquility. Therefore, the wise person must not wait for a calamity to strike before awakening; rather, one must hasten toward sincere repentance and return to Allah, making righteous deeds a shield before time runs out.
