The Authoritative Status of the Companions' Understanding and Their Role in Preserving the Religion

The generation of the Companions—may Allah be pleased with them—is not merely a historical era that has passed; rather, they are the generation that witnessed the revelation and lived the details of the Prophetic Sunnah firsthand. They were witnesses to the reasons for revelation and observers of the practical application of the religion before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ.
Why is the understanding of the Companions considered a reference?
The authority of the Companions in understanding the religion is derived from several fundamental pillars, most notably their proximity to the source of revelation and their linguistic eloquence, which made them the most knowledgeable of people regarding the intent of Allah and His Messenger. This is in addition to the divine purification mentioned in the decisive revelation:
So if they believe in the like of that which you believe, then they are rightly guided
(Surah Al-Baqarah: 137)
The Prophetic Testimony for the Best of Generations
The Prophet ﷺ emphasized the superiority of this generation in explicit authentic hadiths, including his saying: "The best of you are my generation, then those who follow them, then those who follow them" (Narrated by Al-Bukhari). This superiority encompasses faith, understanding, and action, making the following of their path the way of salvation from tribulations.
The Prophet ﷺ also described them as "a security for my nation" (Narrated by Muslim), meaning that their presence and methodology served as a safety valve for the Ummah against the emergence of innovations and misguidance. Hence, slandering the Companions or questioning their integrity is not merely a passing opinion, but rather an attempt to strike at the very foundation through which this religion was transmitted to us.
Adherence to the methodology of the Companions in understanding and inference is the light that guides the Muslim in eras of disagreement, and it is the guarantee for the religion to remain pure as it was revealed.
