The Authoritativeness of the Prophetic Sunnah and the Dangers of Its Denial

The assault on the purified Prophetic Sunnah is not merely a jurisprudential viewpoint; rather, it is in reality an attack on the pillars of Islam and a demolition of the legislative system that Allah has ordained for His servants. For the Sunnah is the practical demonstration and the detailed explanation of what was summarized in the Holy Qur’an.
The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) emphasized this centrality in comprehensive hadiths, including his saying:
I have left among you two things; you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Prophet.
This correlation between the Book and the Sunnah is the sole guarantee of safety from misguidance. Prophetic texts have successively urged adherence to his guidance (peace and blessings be upon him), as he said: «Adhere to my Sunnah»; and in the hadith of Mu’adh ibn Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was sent to Yemen, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) approved the methodology of deriving evidence from the Sunnah when a detailed text is not found in the Book, thereby establishing it as an original source of legislation.
The Sunnah as an Exposition of Worship
Without the Prophetic Sunnah, the major acts of worship such as Prayer and Hajj remain merely general concepts; for it is the Sunnah that taught us the form and manner, as in his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): «Pray as you have seen me praying», and his saying during the Farewell Pilgrimage: «Take your rituals from me». Any attempt to understand Islam apart from the Sunnah is an attempt to obstruct the practice of the religion itself.
In conclusion, one must be wary of those calls that raise the slogan of 'sufficiency with the Qur’an' to strike at the Sunnah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) warned against this path with his firm statement: «Whoever turns away from my Sunnah is not of me». The denial of the Sunnah is an explicit attack on the Prophetic guidance and a subversion of the edifice of Islam.
