In the context of researching prophetic tidings within previous scriptures, a striking term emerges in the second chapter of the Book of Haggai that warrants deep contemplation and linguistic investigation; the text contains a divine promise of a world-altering change and the coming of what is described as the Himdah of Nations.
Linguistic Analysis of the Hebrew Root
What is remarkable in this passage is that the word in its original Hebrew is pronounced: Himdah (חֶמְדַּת). It is linguistically derived from the triconsonantal root (h.m.d), which is the exact same root from which the Arabic name Muhammad ﷺ is derived, as the name of the one who is praised (al-Mahmud).
The Problem of Arabic Translation
Despite this etymological clarity, common Arabic translations have opted to render the term as Desire (The Desire of all Nations), rather than maintaining its nominal significance or referencing its connection to the original root (H-M-D). This practice necessarily leads to the obscuring of an important linguistic and semantic dimension in the text, which clearly points to the attribute and name of the one who shall bring guidance to the nations.
Restoring the correct linguistic reading of Hebrew texts reveals features and tidings that interpretive translations could not entirely efface.
