Many mistakenly believe that practicing "Yoga" is nothing more than physical exercises for bodily flexibility or relaxation techniques. However, scientific investigation into the origins of this practice reveals deep-seated pagan roots in the Hindu creed, where it is essentially a devotional ritual known as the "Sun Salutation."
The Reality of Yoga from a Theological Perspective
In its philosophical origin, Yoga is not merely physical exercise; rather, it is a pagan prayer offered to the sun at sunrise and sunset. This directly conflicts with the pure Monotheism (Tawhid) brought by Islam.
The Prophet ﷺ said: "The sun rises between the two horns of Satan, and at that time the disbelievers prostrate to it."
(Narrated by Muslim)
Therefore, it is incumbent upon the Muslim to be cautious of slipping into these practices under deceptive modern labels, and to take pride in the acts of worship and physical activities they possess which are free from the taints of polytheism and the imitation of non-Muslims in their religious rites.
