The Darwin-Hooker Correspondence: Is Genetic Variation Evidence for Natural Selection?

In 1862, the renowned botanist Joseph Hooker sent a letter to Charles Darwin posing a fundamental question regarding the core of his theory. He suggested that the variation in bird beak shapes, or the observable differences between organisms within the same species, is not necessarily the result of natural selection, but rather an inherent genetic diversity within the species itself.
Darwin's response revealed the extent of the doubt he harbored at the time, stating:
The part of your letter that struck me and made me rethink is that every variation we see might have occurred without natural selection, and I was and still am in complete agreement with you on this.
Despite Darwin's hesitation to fully embrace this idea, modern science, a century later, has validated Hooker's insight. It has become clear that the Gene Pool of a single species provides genetic material that allows for the emergence of diverse shapes, colors, and sizes within the boundaries of that species; humans, despite their varying colors and heights, remain a single human race.
As for the finch beaks that Darwin used as a cornerstone for his theory, contemporary science has revealed that the gene pool of those birds already contains all those variations in beak shapes. This negates the need to assume evolution from one species to another and confirms that what Darwin observed was nothing more than natural genetic variation within the framework of a single species.
