The succession of natural disasters, earthquakes, and epidemics witnessed in the contemporary world are not merely fleeting events; rather, they are signs that necessitate reflection on the relationship between man and his Creator, and the consequences of sins on the stability and well-being of the earth.
Guidance of the Predecessors in the Jurisprudence of Calamities
Our righteous predecessors linked the disturbance of earthly conditions to the disobedience committed by servants. It is narrated that the Commander of the Faithful, Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him), when an earthquake occurred during his time, said: "O people, this earthquake has only occurred because of something you have innovated (of sin). By Him in Whose Hand is my soul, if it returns, I shall never dwell with you in it again." This profound understanding links human behavior to the divine laws governing the universe.
In another scene, when Cyprus was conquered, the noble companion Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) sat weeping. When asked why he wept on a day of victory, he uttered his immortal words: "How insignificant are creatures to Allah if they neglect His command. While they were a powerful and dominant nation, they abandoned Allah's command, so they became as you see." (Narrated by Imam Ahmad in Al-Zuhd).
Corruption on Earth and the Consequence of Turning Away
Allah created the earth prepared for righteousness and goodness, and warned us against spreading corruption through sin and injustice, as stated in the decisive revelation:
And do not cause corruption upon the earth after its reformation.
Surah Al-A'raf, Verse 56
Sins do not affect the individual alone; their impact extends to the surrounding environment. Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "No game is hunted and no tree is cut down except by what it has neglected of glorifying Allah (Tasbih)."
The Path to Salvation
The way out of these trials and disasters lies in a sincere return to Allah Almighty, increasing in seeking forgiveness and glorification, and correcting both individual and collective paths, so that Allah may lift the affliction from us and preserve the lands of the Muslims.
