Obsessive Whispers and the Reality of Faith: A Sharia and Psychological Perspective

Common.writtenBy
Among the matters of faith and psychology that trouble many is the issue of intrusive whispers (waswas). Therefore, it is necessary to emphasize a sublime Sharia principle: that such whispers do not diminish faith. No matter how harsh or strange the thoughts that occur to the mind may be, they are not considered evidence of weak conviction or a decline of faith in the heart.
The Prophet ﷺ taught us that these whispers are nothing but desperate attempts by Satan, who, having failed to lead the servant astray through sins, finds no way except through intimidation and confusion via whispering. In the purified Prophetic Sunnah, there is that which brings solace to the heart in this regard:
A man came to the Prophet ﷺ and said: 'O Messenger of Allah, one of us finds within himself that which he would rather be a piece of charcoal than speak of.' The Prophet ﷺ replied: 'Allahu Akbar! Praise be to Allah who reduced the plot of Satan to mere whispering.'
This hadith clearly indicates that the hatred of these whispers and the gravity of speaking them is, in reality, pure faith; because the believer rejects and refuses them.
Methodology for Dealing with Whispers
Whispers can be likened to smoke; they are merely fleeting thoughts with no value in the scales of truth, yet they cause distress to the servant. The more one focuses on them or fears them, the greater they grow within the self. Therefore, the Prophetic remedy rests on two pillars:
Seeking refuge in Allah from the accursed Satan.
Completely ceasing to indulge the thought and ignoring it entirely.
The Prophet ﷺ said: «Let him seek refuge in Allah and cease». So be reassured and calm, and know that these passing thoughts do not harm you as long as you detest them and remain firm in your conviction.
