The Collapse of Randomness: A Nature Study Undermines a Pillar of Evolutionary Theory

In a remarkable scientific development, the journal Nature—the world's preeminent scientific reference—published a research paper in 2022 that upends traditional Darwinian theory, confirming that genetic mutations are not as random as had been assumed for decades.
The study monitored mutations in a plant species across successive generations, concluding that the prevailing notion of mutations as a directionless force is entirely erroneous. This discovery challenges the established model that views randomness as the primary engine of evolution.
Protection of Essential Genes and Genetic Redundancy
The study revealed astonishing mechanisms for protecting essential genes responsible for major vital functions such as respiration, digestion, and the operation of sensitive organs like the brain and eyes. These genes are shielded from mutations, meaning that random changes do not encroach upon the foundations of life and the requirements for survival.
Even more intriguing is the phenomenon known as Genetic redundancy—the existence of backup copies acting as safety valves; if a mutation occurs in an essential gene, the redundant copy takes its place to completely nullify the mutation's effect. This mechanism practically means that the biological system is designed to resist random changes, not to rely on them.
The new research confirms that the idea of directionality in evolution may be real, or at least closer to reality than we ever previously imagined.
While international scientific journals such as Science Daily and Live Science continue to describe these findings as turning the foundations of evolutionary theory upside down, some in our Arab world still promote the theory as an absolute, unquestionable fact, ignoring these scientific revolutions that restore consideration to the concepts of purpose and design in creation.
