Esoteric Atheism and the Dangers of Isolating Sacred Texts from the Understanding of the Pious Predecessors

What has been presented in artistic and media circles recently, including Ibrahim Issa's film "The Atheist," does not necessarily aim to spread material atheism based on denying the existence of the Creator, Glory be to Him. Rather, it promotes a far more dangerous type: Esoteric Atheism; a methodology that seeks to demolish religion from within by dismantling its interpretative authority.
The Essence of Esoteric Atheism: Isolating the Interpreter from the Text
This trend is based on a dangerous idea established by the modernist movement: the concept of "isolating the interpreter from the text." This necessitates discarding consensus (Ijma'), the Prophetic Sunnah, and the statements of the Ummah's scholars in understanding Revelation. Under this methodology, religious texts become prey to every false interpretation, opening the doors to two destructive paths:
Symbolism: The claim that the concepts of the Holy Qur'an are merely symbols not intended by their literal, apparent meaning.
Historicism: The claim that Sharia rulings were specific to a past historical context that has ended, and are no longer suitable for our era.
These individuals do not fight Islam explicitly; instead, they direct their arrows toward Imam al-Bukhari and the scholars of the Ummah, labeling them as "priesthood" or "brokers of heaven," aiming to undermine the prestige of the scholarly authority that has preserved the religion for the Ummah.
The Sharia Warning Against Departing from the Path of the Believers
The attempt to manufacture a new understanding of religion, divorced from what the Ummah has agreed upon, is in reality the creation of a new sect with no connection to Islam. Allah Almighty has warned those who follow this path, saying:
{And whoever opposes the Messenger after guidance has become clear to him and follows other than the way of the believers - We will give him what he has taken and drive him into Hell, and evil it is as a destination.}
[Surah An-Nisa: 115] As the Prophet ﷺ warned against departing from the community, saying: "Whoever departs from the community even by a handspan has cast off the bond of Islam from his neck."
In conclusion, Esoteric Atheism is more dangerous than material atheism because it infiltrates the collective consciousness under the guise of renewal, while it is, in truth, a subversion of the constants of the faith. Therefore, every Muslim must realize the magnitude of these challenges and contribute to the Da'wah to Allah and adherence to the methodology of Ahl al-Sunnah wa al-Jama'ah.
