Does the multiverse hypothesis conflict with belief in the existence of the Creator, Glory be to Him?
From time to time, questions arise regarding the possibility of other universes parallel to our own, and whether such a conception undermines the foundations of faith. In reality, the concept of the Multiverse remains, to this moment, a mere theoretical hypothesis lacking robust empirical scientific evidence.
Prominent physicists have expressed this methodological deficiency; the renowned physicist John Polkinghorne considers this hypothesis to fall outside the scope of disciplined empirical science, stating:
The multiverse is not physics... it is closer to science fiction.
(John Polkinghorne, One World, p.80)
In the same context, the well-known physicist Russell Stannard emphasizes the absence of a proven mathematical formulation for this proposition, noting that there is not a single physical equation that definitively proves the existence of multiple universes.
The Hypothetical Premise and Divine Grandeur
Even if we were to grant the validity of this hypothesis for the sake of argument, it would pose no theological difficulty. On the contrary, the multiplicity of worlds and horizons only increases our reverence for the grandeur of the Creator, Glory be to Him, who creates what He wills and how He wills; His power is not confined to a single universe.
Even from a physical standpoint, proponents of cosmic inflation, such as the famous physicist Alan Guth, acknowledge that these universes—if they exist—must have an absolute beginning:
It would still be somewhere an ultimate beginning.
In conclusion, the scientific consensus points to a lack of proof, while the rational and legal conclusion confirms that every existent must have a Bringer-into-existence, and that Allah Almighty is the Lord and Sovereign of all things.
[All] praise is [due] to Allah, Lord of the worlds
