Why did Allah create this universe with such immense size and extreme vastness if man is the one appointed as vicegerent within it?
Some raise a question: "Is it conceivable that this vast universe, with all its galaxies, was created solely for man?". This proposition stems from an illusory anthropocentrism, assuming that the Creator's actions must be confined to what man perceives or directly benefits from, whereas the truth is that Allah (Glorified be He) is independent of all worlds, and He created the heavens and the earth for exalted wisdoms and noble purposes.
The Universe as a Mirror of the Creator's Majesty
The magnitude of the universe is not in vain, but rather a manifestation of the Divine attributes of Majesty and Grandeur. Allah did not create this existence to be measured by our sensory perception, but rather as a sign pointing to Him. Furthermore, modern science has revealed that this expansion is not merely empty space, but a necessity for the emergence of life; the minerals and elements upon which our lives depend today were formed in the depths of raging stars across immense distances and epochs.
Likewise, we find that physical laws, such as inertia, are linked to the mass of matter in the universe as a whole, meaning that the stability of our life on this small planet is tied to a comprehensive cosmic balance in which the entire existence participates.
The Response from the Decisive Qur'anic Text
The Holy Qur'an settled this matter by clarifying that creation is established upon Truth and Wisdom, not upon futility or chance, as the Almighty said:
And We did not create the heaven and the earth and that between them aimlessly. That is the assumption of those who disbelieve, so woe to those who disbelieve from the Fire.
[Surah Sad: 27]
Man's lack of encompassment of all the wisdoms of creation does not negate their existence; the universe serves a grand system ordained by Allah, and its magnitude is a radiant proof of the power of Him who originated and fashioned it.
