Are there fabricated hadiths in Sahih al-Bukhari, or narrations that do not exist in other collections of the Sunnah?

A question is raised from time to time regarding the nature of the hadith material in Sahih Imam al-Bukhari, and whether his book contains hadiths that do not exist with other scholars of hadith. In reality, anyone who claims this lacks a correct understanding of the methodology of the Muhaddithin and the science of transmission (Riwayah).

Imam al-Bukhari—may Allah have mercy on him—was not an inventor of hadith texts, but rather a collector and selector of the most authentic reports narrated from the Prophet ﷺ. He documented and transmitted hadiths according to extremely rigorous critical conditions, so that his book would be the most authentic book after the Book of Allah Almighty.

Preservation of the Sunnah Before Codification

Every hadith cited by al-Bukhari in his Jami' was preserved and circulated since the era of the Companions and the Successors (Tabi'un). The scholarly material in the Sahih is not without roots; rather, the source of the hadith can always be traced, and its narrators and paths of transmission through generations can be identified.

Al-Bukhari's work was distinguished by a methodological effort represented in:

• Collecting authentic hadiths from the strongest and most continuous chains of transmission.

• Categorizing hadiths and explaining their jurisprudential and theological objectives with precision.

• Applying strict criteria in the criticism of narrators and the continuity of the chain (Isnad) that are not found in other books.

This is the true essence of Sahih al-Bukhari; it is a carefully selected compendium from the preserved heritage of the Ummah, and not merely isolated narrations with no basis.
